Barry dropped out of high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local copper smelting plant. For the last five years he has gained a reputation as a reliable and hard-working person who only once in a blue moon calls off work because of illness.
Nearly three months ago he started going out with a lady named Carol. They appeared to hit it off right away and looked like they had a lot of fun with one another.
When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This totally changed when they began seeing one another on a fairly constant basis. In fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol without prior notice called Barry one night around 2 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't explain the reason at that particular time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to her condo and found out that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this very hard. In actual fact, he was bewildered because they appeared to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do? Rather than working through his grief, he started getting drunk almost every night. It didn't take long for his buddies at work and for his boss to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least once every week and that he often called off ill. What is more, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and mentioned that Barry repeatedly came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Friday morning he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed a distinct change in his work performance, attendance, behavior, and in his sick time.
"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen many of my relatives and friends experience some really bad problems because of their abusive and hazardous drinking. Barry admired his manager very much and as a result followed through with his recommendation the very next day when he called and scheduled an appointment with someone in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the loss of Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his supervisor and his fellow employees cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in several months and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
