I went out for my nearby appliance store to search for a brand new microwave, giving up within our kitchen the old one - combusted in a daring experiment done by a 7 yr old child. Looking through the flyers and digging on line, one of the brand names at the top of my thoughts was a Jenn Air microwave.
Sensible prices, however the styling appealed to me as both contemporary as well as classic. And also the Jenn Air microwave convection oven came in a colour I'd never seen before - a warm and stylish oiled bronze finish. Our boy, who accompanied me on this expedition, approved of the bronze color, but loved the versions having a LCD display much more - some of the Jenn Air microwave ovens have a little touch-screen display as opposed to the normal control keys.
The now-extinct microwave's buttons turned out difficult for little hands to press, and he tried the touch screen and determined it easier. I experimented with it myself, and found it pretty neat, but I worried over whether or not easier access by the Microwave Doom Boy could be a good thing. The sales rep saw my unease, and explained I should use the Control Lockout feature - designed to prevent just such disasters as had overtaken our last microwave.
Another good factor - at the least for me - is the drop-down door (instead of the older side open design) which enables me the biggest amount of room to put meals inside, and also gets any unintentional splatters when I'm taking meals in or out. With children running inside and outside in the kitchen at meal time, having that additional protection is a good thing!
After seeing them within the store and doing price comparisons and various other brands, I chose the 30" Over-The-Range Microwave Oven with convection. The space inside is roomy enough that I can cook the conventional Christmas dinner, and there's a nifty interior fan that catches smoke and steam - a function the old microwave lacked, which led to moisture clogging up and smells.
